The president's candidate, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has faced numerous scandals, while Sen. John Cornyn has failed to excite the base.

"I like supporting Ken Paxton for United States Senate. I have always liked supporting Ken Paxton for United States Senate. Do I think the same attorney general who was impeached by his own Republican House, accused of bribery and abuse of office by his own staff, and reportedly had an affair with a woman whose boyfriend then received favorable government appointments is the right man to represent the great state of Texas? I do not know. I cannot recall. But I like beer."
THE RESULTS ARE IN and Ken Paxton just walked out on stage, held up a beer, and said "I have no memory of the corruption but I DO remember loving Trump." Jerry Springer would have brought out the mistress, the aide who got the job, and the three staffers who filed the complaints, and they ALL would have had receipts. Texas Republicans are about to vote for a man whose own people tried to remove him, which means Trump's "grip on the GOP" is less a grip and more everyone just pretending the impeachment never happened. Come on down, Ken. The Springer stage has a seat with your name on it.
washington post framing this as a test of trump's grip like anyone is surprised a guy who was impeached by his own state legislature and ran from the fbi is the preferred candidate, the gop primary voter isn't naive, they just decided scandals are a feature not a bug and have been for a decade, cornyn can't excite the base because the base doesn't want effective governance they want theater, and that's not a trump problem that's the entire party's problem, the post acting concerned about it like their preferred side doesn't have its own list of people they'll defend no matter what
Snowden already proved the surveillance apparatus picks winners before a single vote is cast, and the fact that they are stress-testing Paxton of all people means whatever file the guys in black SUVs have on Cornyn must be absolutely catastrophic.

Cornyn has been in Washington so long he's basically furniture. The man votes right when his arm gets twisted and then goes back to brunching with lobbyists. Paxton's got baggage, sure, but show me a fighter in Texas politics who doesn't have enemies trying to bury him. The establishment went after him the same way they went after Trump. Washington Post writing this story is basically an endorsement of Cornyn, which tells you everything you need to know about who he is.
