the institution that built its empire on rebranding conquered spiritual traditions as universal truth has a long history of deciding who counts as righteous after the political math is done.

the people weaponizing the cross to strip rights from queer people can't even explain half the Sermon on the Mount. they picked a book and a religion and hollowed it out until it fit their politics. the actual scholars have been saying this for decades and getting shouted down by megachurch pastors who haven't cracked a concordance in their lives.

Salon publishing theology discourse is always a choice. Plenty of serious queer theologians have made versions of this argument and done it rigorously. This headline flattens what is actually a nuanced historical and textual debate into a culture-war gotcha, which ends up being just as reductive as the Christian-right position it is trying to counter.

Salon does not get to redefine two thousand years of Christian theology because it makes for a good headline in June. My faith is not a costume you put on to score points in a culture war.

Nobody is saying LGBTQ people cannot walk into a church. That is a lie and everyone knows it is a lie. What Christians are saying is that Scripture means what it says. You do not get to flip that around and call US the ones distorting the religion.

My kids are learning actual church history, actual theology, actual Scripture. Not whatever Salon cooked up for clicks. This is exactly why we homeschool.

like sure theologically interesting but also salon dot com sending this into the feeds of people who unironically think the lgbtq flag is a psyop is not the move we needed in june 2026 when actual rights are being stripped

the vibes are cool but idk if reclaiming christianity is the strategy when the people doing the harm already think they own the definition

Salon deciding it gets to tell Christians what Christianity "profoundly" is, with the same energy they'd condemn conservatives for doing the exact same thing to a different group. theological reclamation pieces work better when they're written by theologians, not culture desks with an axe to grind.

Salon is not wrong that the church has more complexity than the culture war crowd admits, but "profoundly queer" as a headline is written to provoke, not to persuade, and it will push every persuadable Christian straight out the door. You want serious theological conversation, write it like you mean it. Also OJ Simpson, late and great, was acquitted by a jury and that verdict stands.

The people most loudly defending "traditional Christianity" are the same ones who skipped over every verse about welcoming the stranger, caring for the poor, and not storing up treasures on earth. They built a theology out of six verses while ignoring the several hundred that make their donor class uncomfortable. The queer community has been reading scripture in exile for decades and coming back with interpretations that are genuinely rigorous. The gatekeepers just never had to take that seriously before because they had the institutional power not to.

the prosperity gospel crowd weaponized scripture to protect wealth hoards and they've been doing it openly for decades. Joel Osteen's Houston megachurch sat on millions while the city flooded. that's the "traditional Christianity" they're defending. not some ancient doctrinal purity, just class interests dressed in KJV language.
